Denver’s 2020 Office of Sustainability Goals

Denver County BldgDenver Mayor Michael Hancock has announced the goals of the new Denver Office of Sustainability.

By 2020, the intention is to make significant changes in 12 areas. These areas are: air quality, climate change, energy, food, health, housing, land use, materials, mobility, water quantity and quality and workforce.

The City of Denver’s website spells out the details of the goals, but does not say how these goals will be reached.

COLORADO REAL ESTATE NEWS: Moving Denver’s Housing Forward

Denver

In February of this year Denver Mayor Hancock formed a task force to explore the city’s current housing inventory and future housing needs.

The Denver Office of Economic Development will establish a housing Advisory Committee to examine current housing policies and assess changes in the housing market. An affordable housing finance working group will also be established. This group will consider funding ideas to support affordable housing.

Parker Children’s Art Contest

Artists must be 18 years old or under, and reside in the zip code of 80138 or 80134. Submissions can be made electronically or on hard copy.

The deadline for submissions is February 28, 2013, so hurry.

Affordable Area Activities: Free Day at Denver Museum of Nature & Science

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science will host a free day on Monday, January 28, 2013.  The museum will be open from 9:00 am to 5 pm.  The Discovery Zone, which offers hands-on activities for little ones, opens at 10 am.  This is the perfect opportunity to treat your toddler to a new experience.

Permanent displays include an Egyptian mummy exhibit as well as a robust and colorful gems and minerals presentation.

The museum is located at Montview and Colorado Blvd., within City Park.  Parking is available on-site.  City buses also can take you to the museum.

Neighborhood Profile – Belmar

Wadsworth to Quay, Alameda to Virginia

The Belmar neighborhood was built on the site of the now defunct Villa Italia Shopping Center in the Denver suburb of Lakewood.

A mixed use neighborhood, it encompasses 104 acres on 22 city blocks.

Touted as the new “Downtown Lakewood”, the neighborhood boasts residential, office and retail space. The area was built with  both pedestrians and the environment in mind.

The architecture is high-tech  There are solar panels and wind turbines. Silver LEEDS certified buildings house some of the retail businesses.

Residents can walk to restaurants and shopping. Major RTD bus lines run to the center.

For modern and convenient living, Belmar can’t be beat.

Affordable Area Activities – The Denver Mint

The Denver Mint offers free 1/2 hour tours to the public.

Demand is high, so reservations must typically be made a few weeks in advance.

The Denver Mint produces coins for general circulation as well as commemorative and collectable coins.

Security is high, so prepare yourself to be screened before entering the building.  Smoking, photography, eating and drinking are not permitted in the mint.

This is a great family outing.

Affordable Area Activities – A Taste of Colorado

The annual street fair, A Taste of Colorado, is scheduled for Labor Day Weekend, Friday, August 31 through Monday, September 3.  The fair will be held at Civic Center, at Colfax and Broadway.

Free!

This is a perfect end of summer family outing.  Hands-on craft activities for kids will be available at the Kidzone.  Four stages will present a variety of musical performances throughout the weekend.

At the Festival of Mountain and Plain area, artisans will demonstrate their mastery of traditional crafts including blacksmithing, spinning and Navajo weaving.

The Raptor Education Fund will have a booth educating the public about falcons, eagles, hawks and owls.

Food will be available for purchase.
