Denver’s Museum of Miniatures, Dolls and Toys

Often overlooked or forgotten, Denver’s Museum of Miniatures, Dolls and Toys is a gem.

Permanent exhibits include doll houses, teddy bears and miniature trains, cars and planes as well as many more.

In addition to preserving and displaying miniatures, toys, and dolls, the museum offers workshops throughout the year.  Workshops incude teddy bear picnic, miniature scenes and fairy and gnomes classes.

On the first Sunday of each month from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm admission is free, although a contribution is requested.

The museum is located at 1880 Gaylord Street and is open from Wednesday through Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and on Sundays from 1:00pm to 4:00 pm.

A visit to this venue is a treat for children and adults alike.

Parker Children’s Art Contest

brushes-21992_640“Leave Parker a Better Place” is the theme of this contest. The winning design shall be used for all the Mayor’s proclamations in 2013.

Artists must be 18 years old or under, and reside in the zip code of 80138 or 80134. Submissions can be made electronically or on hard copy.

The deadline for submissions is February 28, 2013, so hurry.

Affordable Area Activities: Free Day at Denver Museum of Nature & Science

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science will host a free day on Monday, January 28, 2013.  The museum will be open from 9:00 am to 5 pm.  The Discovery Zone, which offers hands-on activities for little ones, opens at 10 am.  This is the perfect opportunity to treat your toddler to a new experience.

Permanent displays include an Egyptian mummy exhibit as well as a robust and colorful gems and minerals presentation.

The museum is located at Montview and Colorado Blvd., within City Park.  Parking is available on-site.  City buses also can take you to the museum.

Affordable Area Activities – Full Moon Harvest Festival

Yet another street festival!

Green Spaces Colorado presents the Full Moon Harvest Festival, Saturday, September 29.  Open from 10 am to 10 pm, the festival is free until 5 pm.  After 5 pm, admission is $5.

There’ll be farmer’s markets, food trucks, artist demonstrations, music and green vendor.

The event will be at Denver’s RiNo district at Sustainability Park on 26th and Arapahoe St.

Affordable Area Activities – The Denver Mint

The Denver Mint offers free 1/2 hour tours to the public.

Demand is high, so reservations must typically be made a few weeks in advance.

The Denver Mint produces coins for general circulation as well as commemorative and collectable coins.

Security is high, so prepare yourself to be screened before entering the building.  Smoking, photography, eating and drinking are not permitted in the mint.

This is a great family outing.

Affordable Area Activities – Festival Italiano

Belmar is hosting the 9th annual Festival Italiano this weekend.

Free to the public, the fair will offer musical performances including opera, gypsy music and Frank Sinatra impersonators.

Children’s activities include grape stomping.

There’ll be a bocce tournament, food demonstrations and Italian lessons.

Food will be available for sale.

The festival will be this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, September 8 and 9, from 10 am to 7 pm.

Affordable Area Activities – A Taste of Colorado

The annual street fair, A Taste of Colorado, is scheduled for Labor Day Weekend, Friday, August 31 through Monday, September 3.  The fair will be held at Civic Center, at Colfax and Broadway.

This is a perfect end of summer family outing.  Hands-on craft activities for kids will be available at the Kidzone.  Four stages will present a variety of musical performances throughout the weekend.

At the Festival of Mountain and Plain area, artisans will demonstrate their mastery of traditional crafts including blacksmithing, spinning and Navajo weaving.

The Raptor Education Fund will have a booth educating the public about falcons, eagles, hawks and owls.

Food will be available for purchase.

Affordable Area Activities: Fiesta Cookout

The 4th annual Fiesta Cookout will be held Saturday, August 25, from noon to 7 pm at 41st and Tejon.

Free!

Sponsored by Servicios de la Raza, this festival has something for everyone.  There’ll be music, dance performances, free health screening, free food from 2-5 (first come, first serve) and a custom car and motorcycle show. Prominent community leaders are scheduled to speak throughout the day.

Free Day at Denver Botanic Gardens

Friday, August 3 will be a free day at The Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield.

Visit a working farm and a dairy barn and silo. View the wildflowers, walk the nature trails and play in the children’s garden.

Affordable Area Activities – Colorado Dragon Boat Festival

The 12th annual Colorado Dragon Boat Festival will be held this weekend at Sloan’s Lake, 25th and Sheridan.

Hours on Saturday, July 28th are from 10 am to 7 pm.  On Sunday, July 29th, the festival will be from 10 am to 5 pm.

Admission is free.  Asian food will be available for purchase.  Along with boat races, the event offers dance performances, music performances and a special area for kids.
